-This picture shows a geothermal plant at work

Summary - This article says that geothermal energy is the "Charlie Brown" of renewable sources. Meaning it does not get the same attention as other renewable sources. Unlike solar and wind, it can be produced 24 hours of the day, while when the sun goes down solar energy is out of the picture, and wind is so unpredictable. Getting geothermal energy moving in forward progress was a recent topic of a Geothermal Energy Association conference in Washington, D.C. Geothermal energry need to have support, wind was just like geothermal, once it was given funding it took off, and did much better. For geothermal energy to go farther much support is needed due to the high costs and risks. It also takes many years to complete, it is no short term project. Alternative energy in America has been hamstrung out with start-and-stop policies, and that is bad for all renewable energy sources. The upsides to geothermal energy could be great though, a successful plant can produce 30 years of affodable energy that emits basically no greenhouse gases, with barley any environmental impact.

Opinion - I think America needs to start converting to renewable energy sources, considering we are running out of other resources, and it is much cleaner. People need to put more thought into this, because the depletion of some sources is just around the corner. No one really thinks about life without what we have, because we haven't lost it yet, but when we lose it there will be a large panic and I believe people won't know what to do.

Questions -

I-Why do we continue to put money into pipelines for shale oil and natural gas, and deepwater ocean drilling with the know fact the climate is changing?

II - If you were at the conference in Washington, D.C., about geothermal energy what would you have said to the people there about converting?

III - Do you think the U.S. will wait till the last second to change our ways to get energy? Why or why not?

  1. I find this idea very interesting & would like to see how it pans out. It's a great idea and i think that the conservation of our environment is crucial in sustaining an efficient future for our entire globe. However, i'm sure that this will take a while to catch on, simply because of the fact that people are never eager to throw all of their money toward one idea. Everything takes time, but this energy source seems worth taking action towards!

    QUESTIONS:
    1. i'm not exactly sure. My guess is that it's cheaper and faster to obstain. Also, shale oil and natural gas have been a source of energy for longer than these new alternative energy sources like geothermal energy; therefore, they also have more expertise in the processes and strategies of obtaining it.
2.I would definitely be pro-conversion! I would have to learn more about it; however, the way that it was explained by this summary, if we put money into it now, it will definitely be helpful in the years to com once it is mature enough to be used! As nonrenewable energy sources continue to be depleted, i would keep reinforcing that this energy source could definitely prevail.
3.I think that there are many activists and scientists out there that will devote their time to making sure that we don't do that. However, oil and gas consumption are huge industries, and they aren't going tob e gone overnight. I think that it is going to still take a while for the majority of energy comes from renewable resources; however,i believe that it should be sooner rather than later.

  2. I'm surprised. If geothermal energy is so easy to get and efficiant, why haven't we been using it? According to this artical the government needs to start giving more attention to geothermal energy, because it looks like in time it could be the thing that erases our alternate energy problem. We need to give more support to geothermal energy so the bussiness can take off.

    1. Because we have become so dependend on the oil from drilling that we don't seem to realize all of the problems it is causing for our climate
    2. That it is a great idea! Or at least that we should give it a try. Geothermal could be the step we need to take in order to take care of alternative energy issues here in the U.S.
    3. Yes because until the problems really start to take a toll on our planet people won't aknowlege that we need to change what we do in order to reverse what we've don't.

  3. I believe we really need to realize what is happening to our planet. We should definatly look into this because i want my future to be clean a bright, not unhealthy and misrable. zeven though geothermal energy isn't very cost-effective, we should stilll concider it. even if it is just renewable sources of energy, we really need to make my future clean. If we don't then my generation's future won't be that good.

    3 new questions:
1)Will our generation change it's sources of energy? why or why not?
2)which energy do you think is best for our country right now? explain.
3)imagine you are the president of the united states. What type of ergy would you use and why?
